Road and gravel bikes
Road bikes for speed on tarmac, and gravel bikes that let you keep going when the tarmac ends. Both feature drop handlebars and a sporty riding position.
Road or gravel?
A road bike is built for speed, with low weight, narrow tyres and a position optimised for efficient riding on tarmac. A gravel bike adds wider tyres, more stable geometry and often mounts for racks and bags. It handles tarmac, gravel and easier off-road routes, making it popular for touring and bikepacking. Choose a road bike if you stay on the road, or gravel if you want the freedom to mix surfaces.
